THE QUESTIONS

Things people ask, answered honestly.

AI chatbots

Does my website actually need an AI chatbot?

Not necessarily, and we'd rather tell you honestly than sell you one that won't be used. A chatbot tends to earn its place when you get a steady stream of the same questions, when customers often come looking outside working hours, or when a quick answer genuinely affects whether someone enquires. If your site is small and a clear contact page does the job, a chatbot may just add clutter. The strategy call gives you an honest answer either way.

Will an AI chatbot give my customers wrong information?

A badly built one can, and that’s a real risk worth taking seriously. We build chatbots trained specifically on your business information, configured to work from what they actually know and to say "I’m not sure, let me pass you to a person" rather than guess. A clean handoff to a human is built in. A chatbot that invents answers is worse than no chatbot, and ours are set up not to.

What does the chatbot's monthly fee cover?

Genuine running costs. An AI chatbot has real per-use costs behind it, the AI model itself, plus hosting, and ongoing tuning to keep its answers accurate as your business changes. The monthly fee covers those. It isn't a markup for its own sake; it's the actual cost of keeping a chatbot running well.

Content and SEO

Do you write content using AI?

Sometimes, and we're open about how. The thinking, the angle, and the judgement about what's worth saying are human. AI is used where it genuinely helps, with research and first drafts, and everything is edited properly by a person before it goes anywhere. Some pieces are best written with little or no AI at all, and we'll tell you when that's the case. What matters is that the finished writing is good and sounds like you. The Content Creation page explains the approach in full.

Will SEO get me to the top of Google?

No honest provider can promise a number-one ranking, and anyone who does is telling you something untrue. Search results depend on factors no agency controls. What SEO can reliably do is the onsite and technical work that genuinely helps: a site properly built to be found, well-structured, and aimed at the searches that lead somewhere. That work moves the needle; guarantees don’t exist.

Do you do link building?

No. Our SEO is onsite and technical work: everything on your own site. Offsite link building is a separate discipline with its own specialists, and done badly it can harm a site rather than help it. If your situation genuinely calls for it, we'll say so honestly and point you to someone who does it properly.

What’s this "AEO" thing?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation. It's the work of making a site visible to AI systems, the AI answers in Google, and tools like ChatGPT and Claude, not just to traditional search. As more questions get answered by AI directly, being something those systems can read and cite matters more. It's part of our SEO service, not a separate bolt-on. The SEO page covers it properly.

Email, analytics, and conversion

Is "email marketing" the same as setting up my business email?

No, and it's a common mix-up. Email Marketing Setup, a Grow service, is about campaigns and newsletters sent to a list of customers. Setting up your day-to-day business inbox, the address you send and receive normal email on, is Email Hosting, over in the Host pillar. Plenty of businesses want both, and we can help with both. If you're after a professional email address for your domain, you want Email Hosting; if you want to send newsletters and offers, you want Email Marketing Setup.

Why does analytics matter if I can already see I’m getting enquiries?

Because analytics tells you where those enquiries come from, and where the ones you're not getting are being lost. It shows which pages work, which quietly turn people away, and whether the time and money you spend on the site is paying off. Without it, every decision is a guess. With it, you can put effort where it actually counts.

How do I know if conversion optimisation is worth it for me?

It depends mostly on traffic. Conversion work means testing changes and measuring the result, and that needs enough visitors and enquiries for the difference to be real rather than chance. If your site is busy, it can be very worthwhile. If it's quiet, the honest first step is usually getting more of the right visitors, through SEO or content, before optimising for conversion. We'll tell you straight which applies to your site, rather than sell you testing you can't yet measure.

Why don't you set up Google Analytics by default?

Because for most small businesses it isn't worth what it asks in return. Google Analytics needs a cookie banner that visitors have to click past before they can read the site, and it sends visitor data to Google for purposes that aren't yours. The platform we use, Umami, does the same job without either. If you genuinely need GA4, usually because you're running Google Ads and need conversion data flowing back to the campaign, we'll set it up alongside or instead, and tell you straight what the trade-off is.

What's Umami?

A privacy-first open source analytics platform. It tells you the same things you'd expect from any analytics tool, where visitors come from, what they read, where they leave, what they do once they're there, without using cookies and without collecting personal data. We host it on our own infrastructure, so your visitor data stays with us and with you. It's GDPR-compliant by design, so there's no cookie banner needed for it.

Will my site need a cookie banner for analytics?

No. Umami doesn't set cookies and doesn't collect personal data, so it doesn't trigger the cookie-consent rules. You may still need a banner for other reasons, other third-party scripts, embedded videos, advertising pixels, but the analytics itself won't be one of them.

Does the analytics work for sites you don't host?

Yes. The setup is the same, and we run the platform on our own infrastructure either way, with a small monthly fee of £5 per site to cover the hosting of it. For sites on a BrainWeb hosting plan, the platform itself is included as standard, and only the setup work is quoted.

Grow services in general

What are Grow services, exactly?

Grow is the pillar of our work that helps a website perform once it's live. It covers content creation, SEO, email marketing setup, analytics and reporting, conversion optimisation, and AI chatbots. Design, Build, and Host get a site made, launched, and looked after; Grow is the work that helps it actually bring in enquiries, customers, and sales.

Do I have to have a website built by you to use Grow services?

No. Grow services are available standalone, for sites we didn't build and don't host. Plenty of Grow clients come to us with an existing site that's working well enough but could be doing more. We'll usually want a proper look at the site first, so our advice is grounded in what's actually there.

Can I take just one Grow service, or do I need a package?

Just one is fine. Each Grow service stands on its own, and many clients start with a single one, a content rhythm, an SEO audit, a chatbot. There are no forced bundles. If several services would genuinely work well together, we'll say so, and there's a discount for taking more than one, but that's an offer, not a condition.

How are Grow services priced?

It depends on the service and whether it's one-off or ongoing. As a rough guide: content from £40 a piece or £150/month for a regular rhythm; SEO audits from £200, retainers from £150/month; email marketing setup from £150; analytics setup from £100; conversion audits from £300; AI chatbots from £400 to set up plus a monthly fee. Every service is quoted clearly before any work begins, and the strategy call to scope it is always free.

One-off or ongoing, which do I need?

Either, depending on the service and your situation. Some Grow work is genuinely one-off: an SEO audit, an analytics setup, a single landing page. Some only works as an ongoing rhythm: regular content, continuous conversion testing. And some is a setup followed by optional ongoing management, email marketing and chatbots both work that way. The strategy call works out which shape fits. Ongoing arrangements are month to month, with no long tie-in.

Working with us

How does a Grow project start?

With a strategy call. It's free, takes around half an hour, and commits you to nothing. We'll talk about your site, what's working and what isn't, and what would genuinely help. If we're a good fit, we'll follow up with an honest steer and a clear quote. If a different service, or no service yet, is the honest answer, we'll tell you that instead.

Can Grow services be added to a website you built for me?

Yes, naturally. Grow is the fourth pillar of the journey, the work that helps a launched site perform, so for a site we designed and built it's the obvious next step. It's equally available later, whenever you're ready, rather than something that has to be decided at launch.

Are Grow services available month to month, or am I tied in?

Month to month, with no long tie-in. Ongoing Grow arrangements, content, SEO retainers, analytics reporting, chatbot management, run on a rolling basis. The aim is to keep your work because it’s genuinely helping, not because a contract makes leaving difficult.
