WordPress development, clean under the bonnet

If your business runs on WordPress, the difference between a site that lasts and one that slowly clogs up is how it was built. We take the signed-off design and engineer it as a WordPress site: a custom Divi child theme written as real code, a short and deliberate plugin list, and security and performance in the build from the start. We’re a small studio in north Norfolk, a short drive from Norwich, doing WordPress development for businesses there and across the UK. Starting prices are on the web design page; the quote is fixed in writing before the build begins.

What we mean by it

Built clean, and built to stay that way.

WordPress runs a huge share of the web, and a fair share of that is slow, bloated, and held together by a dozen plugins nobody dares update. That's not the platform's fault. It's what happens when a site gets assembled rather than built.

A well-built WordPress site is a different thing:

  • A custom Divi child theme at its core, written as structured, version-controlled code, rather than a tangle of page-builder overrides

  • A short, deliberate list of plugins, each one chosen for a reason and kept current

  • A clean database, without years of orphaned settings left behind by plugins that came and went

  • Fast page loads, because performance was part of the build rather than a caching plugin bolted on at the end

How we work

The care goes where nobody looks.

A few things that shape every WordPress build at BrainWeb.

Clean code, version-controlled from day one

Every build lives in Git from the first commit. Changes are tracked, the history is readable, and the work can be reviewed before it goes live.

A custom Divi child theme at the heart of the build

The child theme is written as structured, version-controlled code, built for your design alone. It keeps your customisations safe when Divi updates, and it means the site can be understood and maintained by a developer later, including one who isn't us.

Plugins chosen with discipline

Every plugin is a dependency, a possible way in, and a thing that can break on update. We use as few as the project needs, choose well-maintained ones, and resist the habit of reaching for a plugin every time something needs doing.

Custom plugin development where it's the right answer

Sometimes the better answer is a small piece of custom code rather than a marketplace plugin carrying ten features you'll never use. Where a project needs bespoke functionality, we build it as a clean custom plugin that does one job well.

Security and performance built into the build

Security hardening, image optimisation, caching strategy, and Core Web Vitals tuning are part of the build itself. A site should be fast and secure on the day it launches, not after a follow-up invoice. What keeps it that way afterwards, the SSL, backups, and monitoring, is the hosting's job.

Tested before it goes live

The build is tested across modern browsers and devices on a staging environment, and the whole codebase is read by a frontier AI model for security weaknesses and bugs a human review can miss; what it finds, we fix before launch. Launch day handles DNS, redirects, analytics, and search indexing carefully, so nothing breaks and nothing drops out of Google.

Build shapes

Three typical shapes, the same care behind all of them.

The build approach is the same; the scope and technical complexity shift depending on what the site needs to do. The discovery call works out which shape fits your project.

Standard WordPress build

A WordPress build with Divi and a custom child theme, up to about twelve pages, with a blog. The typical content site for an SME: home, services, about, contact, and a blog to publish from over time. Clean code, disciplined plugin use, ready for you to extend yourself.

Custom WordPress build

For larger or more technical projects: custom post types and fields for events, properties, products, or team members; third-party integrations with CRMs, booking systems, or accounting software; custom plugin development; advanced search and filtering; membership or login functionality.

WordPress e-commerce build

WooCommerce-based online shops. Storefront, product pages, basket, and checkout, with Stripe or PayPal payment integration, UK tax configuration, shipping setup, and order emails. Built to handle real transactions.

What's included

What's in every WordPress build.

Every WordPress build includes everything below, inside the fixed quote.

  • A fixed written quote before any build work begins; the number we agree is the number you pay
  • Built to the signed-off design, checked page by page against it
  • A custom Divi child theme, written as structured, version-controlled code
  • Mobile-responsive build, tested across modern browsers and devices
  • Performance optimisation: image handling, caching strategy, and Core Web Vitals tuning
  • Accessibility carried through the build, with WCAG 2.1 AA basics handled by default
  • AI-assisted code review before launch, with what it finds fixed by us
  • GDPR-compliant forms, cookies, and data handling
  • SEO foundations: meta tags, sitemap, schema, and clean URLs, readable by modern AI search agents
  • WordPress security hardening through the build; SSL and server security are covered by the hosting
  • A short training session on WordPress and Divi at handover
  • A couple of hours of post-launch tweaks for the small things that always come up
  • One year of managed WordPress hosting; the Host page has the detail
  • Direct access to the maker, throughout the project and for as long as you're a client

Every WordPress site we build meets these as standard. Some are obvious, some less so, all of them matter.

What it costs

What does a WordPress build cost?

It depends on the shape: a standard build, a custom build with post types and integrations, or a WooCommerce store each start at a different point, and the web design page puts the starting prices side by side. Whatever the shape, the quote is fixed in writing before work begins, and the first year of managed WordPress hosting is part of the project.

After launch

A WordPress site is not a fit-and-forget thing.

WordPress is the most popular publishing platform on the web, which makes it the biggest single target for automated attacks. A site that's built well and kept up to date stays safe. One left to drift between updates, unmonitored, on cheap shared hosting, carries materially more risk than it did two years ago.

That's why every WordPress build includes the first year of managed WordPress hosting as part of the project: daily backups, security monitoring, plugin and core updates, and rescue cover if anything ever goes wrong. The build is hardened during development, and the hosting keeps it that way. The two are part of the same job, not two separate things to worry about.

The other options

WordPress isn't the only way we build.

Two other build paths sit alongside WordPress Development. If you've not settled on a platform yet, the Build overview has a comparison to help you choose.
