Bespoke web design, started from a blank page

Some businesses win or lose work on how they come across, and the website carries most of that first impression. Bespoke web design starts from a blank page: the structure, the typography, the photography, and the small interactions are all designed around what you sell and who buys it, then signed off with you before anything is built. We're a small studio in north Norfolk, a short drive from Norwich, doing bespoke web design for businesses there and across the UK. The quote is fixed in writing before any work begins; build starting prices sit side by side on the web design page.

WHAT WE MEAN BY IT

Every decision made for your business alone

Bespoke web design means the site is designed from a blank page rather than adapted from a theme. The homepage structure, the navigation, the typography, the spacing, the way photography is framed, and the small interactions are each decided for your business and your customers, then signed off with you before any code is written.

Bespoke doesn't mean flashy. It can be quiet, restrained, even classical. What it means is that every choice was made deliberately for you, rather than inherited from a theme that thousands of other sites are also running. That's what the word buys.

WHO IT'S FOR

Right when the website needs to look like nobody else's.

This is the design approach to choose when:

  • The website is part of how the business presents itself, and a generic template would undersell it
  • Customers will judge you partly on how the site looks and feels (hospitality, brand-led professional services, design-conscious shops, portfolio-led work)
  • You want distinctive interactions or layout choices that off-the-shelf platforms struggle to handle
  • You want a site you'll still be proud of in five years

It's probably not the right fit when:

  • You need to be live in a fortnight on a tight budget (a single-page site or a standard WordPress build is usually the better call)
  • The visual side isn't the priority and the budget would work harder on content or paid search
  • You want to be able to swap themes or rearrange the design yourself after launch (Divi-based WordPress is built for that; bespoke isn't)

If one of those sounds like you, we'll say so on the first call and point you at the better option.

HOW WE WORK

Five habits that shape every bespoke project

A few things that shape every bespoke project at BrainWeb.

One person across the brief, the design, and the build

The person on the first call is the person who designs the site and oversees the build, so decisions made in design are made by someone who knows exactly how they'll be built, and they get made in the conversation rather than after it.

Editorial sensibility over decoration

We borrow from printed editorial design: typography carrying the visual work, whitespace used with confidence, restrained colour, real photography over stock. The aim is a site that feels edited rather than decorated. This is the reference page for those principles; the other design approaches inherit them.

Accessibility designed in

Colour contrast, focus states, type sizes, and reading order are decided in the design phase. WCAG 2.1 AA basics are the default, and the build page covers how they're implemented and tested.

Designed to bring in work

Looking right is necessary, but the design answers to what the site is for: enquiries, bookings, sales, whichever of those your business runs on. Every layout decision gets checked against that.

Real photography over stock

A real photo of your business, your people, or your work nearly always outperforms stock. We'll tell you what would help, work with what you've got, or arrange photography where the project warrants it.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

What's in every bespoke design project.

Everything below is inside the fixed quote. The design phase ends with a full specification ready for the build, which has its own included list on the build pages.

  • The initial conversation, free, 30 to 60 minutes, so we both know it's the right fit before anything is quoted
  • A fixed written quote for the design phase, before any work begins
  • A design started from a blank page around your business and your customers
  • The First Look: the homepage and one key internal page, at real fidelity, for you to react to
  • Revision rounds, as many as it takes; we don't count them against a limit
  • Full design specifications, ready to hand to the build phase
  • Designed mobile-first and checked at phone, tablet, and desktop sizes
  • Accessibility designed in: contrast, type sizes, focus states, and layouts that work with a keyboard
  • GDPR-aware design: forms that ask only for what's needed, and consent that doesn't get in the way

Build-phase inclusions are listed on the matching build pages.

WHAT IT PAIRS WITH

The design shapes the build, and the build shapes what the design can do.

Bespoke design isn't tied to one platform, but some builds give it more room than others. The three pairings we work with most.

Bespoke design with a modern JS build

The usual pairing: Astro or Next.js with Payload CMS. The build detail is on the modern JS development page.

WHAT IT COSTS

What does bespoke web design cost?

Bespoke design isn't a fixed tier, because the cost moves with the build it pairs with and the size of the site. What's fixed is how it's priced: a written quote before any work begins, 50% at design sign-off and 50% at launch, and the figure we agree is the figure on the invoice. The web design page puts the three build approaches and their starting prices side by side, and the first conversation, which costs nothing, ends with a number for your project.

THE OTHER OPTIONS

Not sure if bespoke is the right call?

All three are designed here; the difference is how the design fits the platform underneath.

WordPress Web Design (with Divi)

The same bespoke design, built on WordPress with Divi, for businesses that want to edit their own pages after launch.

Modern Web Design (Astro / Next.js)

Bespoke design on Astro or Next.js with Payload CMS, when speed, security, and a site that ages well come first.

One-Page Web Design

The same design thinking at a smaller scale, for sole traders and side projects that don’t need a full site yet.
