About the studio

Built in Norfolk, working across the UK

More about BrainWeb

Websites for builders, accountants, independent shops, holiday lets, restaurants, and trades, most of them within an hour or two of the studio, and increasingly across the rest of the UK.

Ric, who leads the studio, started on a newspaper pasteup bench, took a PhD in computational neuroscience, and has been building websites for businesses since 2010. The mix shows in the work: the design, the code, and the question of what a visitor does next all get the same attention.

You always speak to the maker

Every project is led by Ric from the first call through to launch and beyond: one person across the brief, the design, the build, and the launch, so decisions get made in the conversation rather than after it.

One point of contact

A site that pulls its weight

Looking nice is necessary, but it isn't the job. We design and build for what the site actually has to do: bring in enquiries, take bookings, sell things, convince visitors to start a conversation. Every decision answers to that.

Judgement, not fashion

We work in WordPress with Divi, and in modern JS frameworks like Astro and Next.js. Whichever fits the project, not whichever is trending. The right tools for the work, used carefully, never just because they're new.

Most clients stay for years

Most of our work comes from clients we built sites for years ago; some are on their fourth website with us. The first year of hosting is included, and after that most people simply stay.

How a project runs

Four steps from brief to launch

Once you've decided to commission a website, this is how it runs: four steps in the build itself, a free conversation before it, and aftercare after it. Two invoices, 50% each, at the points marked.

To begin with

The Initial Conversation

A proper chat. Free, no pressure, usually half an hour on the phone or over a coffee. We talk about your business, what the website needs to do, and what success looks like.

01

The Groundwork

The raw materials. Logos, copy, photos, login details, integrations. We send a clear list, you send what you've got, and we get going.

USUALLY A WEEK OR TWO
02

The First Look

A design at real fidelity, not a moodboard, for you to react to. When the direction is right, the first invoice goes out and the build starts.

03

The Build

The full site, built out with you in the loop. Every page, every feature, every integration. You see it come together as we go.

The Launch

DNS, redirects, analytics, indexing, performance checks. Everything verified, site live, final invoice sent.

After Launch

Aftercare

Launch day isn't goodbye. Every new site includes a couple of hours of our time for the small tweaks that always come up, plus a full year of secure managed hosting. After that, we're still here.

Where we work

Web design across Norfolk and beyond

We're based in Norfolk, in a small village called Smallburgh, roughly ten minutes from North Walsham, Stalham, or Wroxham. Most of our clients are within an hour's drive of the office, across Norwich and north Norfolk, but we work with businesses right across the UK and occasionally further afield.

For local clients we'll often come to you. For everyone else it's phone, email, WhatsApp, or a video call, whichever you're most comfortable with. Plenty of sites have been built without us ever meeting in person.

Common questions

The questions that come up most often

Ask a question

The same handful of questions come up on nearly every first call, so here are the answers, with numbers where there are numbers. If yours isn't here, ask, and you'll get an answer rather than a brochure.

Does my website actually need an AI chatbot?

Not necessarily, and we'd rather tell you honestly than sell you one that won't be used. A chatbot tends to earn its place when you get a steady stream of the same questions, when customers often come looking outside working hours, or when a quick answer genuinely affects whether someone enquires. If your site is small and a clear contact page does the job, a chatbot may just add clutter. The strategy call gives you an honest answer either way.

Do you back up my site?

Yes. Managed WordPress hosting includes automatic daily backups with 30 days of restore points, so if something goes wrong, the site can be rolled back to a recent known-good version. Modern static sites are version-controlled in full, so the site can be rebuilt and redeployed from source at any time. Either way, a bad day is recoverable.

How secure is your hosting?

Both hosting types are built for security. WordPress hosting includes multiple firewalls, malware detection, application security patching, full account isolation, and active monitoring. Modern static hosting has a naturally small attack surface, with no live database or PHP runtime to attack. No hosting is a magic shield, but well-built sites on properly managed hosting are genuinely safe, and we keep watching rather than assuming.

Should I choose WordPress or a modern JS framework?

It depends on how you want to live with the site. WordPress with Divi suits you if you want to add pages and features yourself, and want the breadth of the WordPress plugin ecosystem to draw on. A modern JS framework (Astro or Next.js) suits you if speed, security, and low maintenance are the priorities and you want a clean, focused editor. Both are good. They're good for different reasons, and the discovery call works out which fits your project. Neither is the trendy choice or the safe choice; they're two honest answers to different needs.

Can you build an online shop?

Yes. For most e-commerce we build on WordPress with WooCommerce: it's mature, well-understood, and handles real catalogues, payments, UK tax, and shipping properly. A small number of products can also be handled on a modern build. The discovery call works out which suits the size and ambition of your shop.

Do you write content using AI?

Sometimes, and we're open about how. The thinking, the angle, and the judgement about what's worth saying are human. AI is used where it genuinely helps, with research and first drafts, and everything is edited properly by a person before it goes anywhere. Some pieces are best written with little or no AI at all, and we'll tell you when that's the case. What matters is that the finished writing is good and sounds like you. The Content Creation page explains the approach in full.

What’s this "AEO" thing?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation. It's the work of making a site visible to AI systems, the AI answers in Google, and tools like ChatGPT and Claude, not just to traditional search. As more questions get answered by AI directly, being something those systems can read and cite matters more. It's part of our SEO service, not a separate bolt-on. The SEO page covers it properly.

Can you rebuild a very old website?

Yes. Modernising legacy sites is exactly what our Website Recovery service does: sites built in Dreamweaver, FrontPage, hand-coded HTML, or on platforms no longer supported. We can also recover sites that have been lost entirely, reconstructing them from web archives where the original files are gone. Every recovery starts with an assessment of what can realistically be brought back, before any quote.

Is "email marketing" the same as setting up my business email?

No, and it's a common mix-up. Email Marketing Setup, a Grow service, is about campaigns and newsletters sent to a list of customers. Setting up your day-to-day business inbox, the address you send and receive normal email on, is Email Hosting, over in the Host pillar. Plenty of businesses want both, and we can help with both. If you're after a professional email address for your domain, you want Email Hosting; if you want to send newsletters and offers, you want Email Marketing Setup.

What are Grow services, exactly?

Grow is the pillar of our work that helps a website perform once it's live. It covers content creation, SEO, email marketing setup, analytics and reporting, conversion optimisation, and AI chatbots. Design, Build, and Host get a site made, launched, and looked after; Grow is the work that helps it actually bring in enquiries, customers, and sales.

Will my site be fast?

Yes, because performance is part of the build rather than an afterthought. We optimise images, keep the code lean, configure caching properly, and tune for Core Web Vitals. Modern JS framework sites are fast by default, since pages are served as static files. Well-built WordPress sites are fast too; they just need proper hosting and caching to stay that way as they grow.

Will I be able to edit the site myself?

Yes, to a degree that depends on the build. WordPress with Divi gives you the most hands-on control: you can edit pages, add sections, and change layouts yourself. A modern JS build with Payload CMS gives you clean control of content (text, images, posts, new entries) while the layout stays as designed. Every build comes with a short training session so you can confidently do the things you'll want to do.
